At DHM, we have been disciplined by four decades of work in the uniquely intricate and demanding environments of the American West. As stewards of and advocates for these magnificent but delicate landscapes, we understand that aesthetic decisions must be grounded in scientific understanding. Ours is an ecosystem-based design practice.
Finding the balance between cultural values and natural processes is the heart of every project. That starts with investigation of the local ecology. What natural processes occur here? What is now supporting or undermining those functions? What is the human history? What has this place been, and what could it become? Rigorous inquiry gives us science-based metrics for strategies to protect and bolster the natural dynamics of a place. That’s what can ensure sustainable human presence.
Above all, in appreciating and honoring the ecological nature of a place, we strive for a light touch on the land, to preserve its beauty and health.
