At DHM, everything centers on ecology. The natural systems of landscapes are what we value, and what we know.
In any project, we investigate the ecosystems first. What was in place originally? What has been altered? What’s working and what needs repair? Our goal is to renew the place and free its natural processes. But we are also tasked with designing ways for people to be present — sometimes in large numbers — without causing damage.
The purpose of ecological landscape architecture is rarely pure restoration. Rather, it is to harmonize a place’s recovered health with its ongoing human use — a delicate balance indeed.
