DHM worked closely with the owner, interior designer, and architect to develop the plans for this custom residential & horse property. Competitive riding is a priority for the owner, and the associated lifestyle is reflected in the site design. The barn and riding arena were sited to be visible from the back of the house, overlooking commanding views of the nearby reservoir and Elk Mountains range. The access to the site and barn accommodate tractor-trailers in support of the equestrian facilities and take advantage of the panoramic views that enhance the dramatic sense of arrival to the property. Existing, mature stands of gambel oak and serviceberry were preserved to maintain the character of the site. Site walls, fences, landform, landscape, and road alignment provide security and privacy from the nearby County Road. Gathering spaces at the house and barn were designed to be used in all seasons, with a shaded outdoor room by the pool; intimate, protected seating around a fire table; banquet seating at the greenhouse and perennial cutting garden; and stone seat walls for viewing riders in the arena.
